2005 | Fiona Apple released Extraordinary Machine, her third album and her first since When The Pawn dropped in 1999. After a leaked version of the album made its way to the internet in 2005, Fiona re-recorded the songs and released an updated version of the album. |
2004 | VH1 held its first ever Hip-Hop Honors. Stalwarts of hip-hop such as Run-D.M.C., DJ Kool Herc, KRS-One, Public Enemy, Rock Steady Crew, DJ Hollywood, Tupac and The Sugarhill Gang were honored on the evening. |

1980 | Zenyatta Mondatta, The Police’s third album release, continued their theme of naming their records French-sounding titles. However, with this album, the title has no clear translation, although some hinted that it was a stylized combination of “zenith” and “monde” (Top of the World). It would go on to become their most successful album in the U.S. up to that point as it reached a peak of #5 and earned the band a pair of Grammy awards. |
1975 | R&B/Neo-Soul singer India Arie was born in Denver, Colorado. |
1941 | Famed “The Twist” singer Chubby Checker was born Ernest Evans in Spring Gulley, South Carolina; The song was originally recorded by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters but became a hit for Checker in 1960. Catapulted by the television program American Bandstand, the song launched a dance craze across the country. |
