1S1K (“1Shot”) Sean Mario is a dynamic recording artist whose style runs the gamut of the entire music spectrum. His tracks are at their core rap and hip-hop, however, his style of hip-hop redefines what you would imagine of the genre.
1Shot brings forth a sound that he categorizes on multiple levels as Emo Rap, Alternative Rap or Cloud Rap/HipHop. The foundation of his music is driven by eclectic soundscapes and a unique vocal flow and delivery in which he weaves seamlessly between a classic rap style and a melodic wavy style which incorporates singing and vibrant harmonics.
Somewhere in between his background in metal/hardcore, of which he’s been in several bands, 1Shot has developed an innovative niche in the rap space which garners the full attention of anyone that hears it. Compelling to say the least and he puts his multi-dimensional talents on full display with his latest EP effort, “A Shot In The Dark 2”. The EP features seven tracks containing collaborations with such talented feature artists as Superman, Eric J, DJ TheGr8, Vasha and Kidd Kasey.
1Shot shares the premise of the new EP as he explains, “‘A Shot In The Dark 2’ is the second installment to the A Shot In The Dark craze. This EP is about coming from dirt and making something out of nothing when so many have counted you out. It’s all about being a winner not a survivor.“
The production on the EP is sonically diverse, featuring a primary mix of booming bass lines and trap-hip hop percussion patterns surrounded by an incredible blend of ethereal melodies and riffs. It’s like rap, dream pop and R&B meshed into one big melting pot of sound. “A Shot in the Dark 2” is a bona fide top notch release in that aspect. The closing track “Laundry” is somewhat a departure from the core sound as it boasts a prominent rock edge, particularly, the distorted guitar phrase in the intro.
The songs on the EP also touch on a wide variety of topics lyrically. The tracks tackle such concepts as romance (“Blow Your Mind’, “Realize”, “901615 Vibes”), prosperity and progressing in life (“Foreign”), reflection on youth and myriad of issues growing up, resorting to self-medication i.e. living in a constant altered state of mind (“World on Drugs“), mental health conflicts such as angst, isolation and anxiety in “Easier That Way” and the aforementioned “Laundry” which 1Shot uses as a clever metaphor to symbolize walking away from a toxic relationship.
“A Shot in the Dark 2” can easily be placed into a category we call a “no-skip” project as you can listen from beginning to end without feeling the need to forward past any track to the next song. Fittingly, the EP starts off with the track “Blow Your Mind” and that’s exactly what you experience as you make your way through the collection of songs, whether it’s 1Shot’s dynamic vocal performances or the one-of-a-kind instrumentals.

1S1K Sean Mario is an intellectual with a surprisingly impressive hip hop flow. He grew up listening to metal/hardcore bands (being in quit a few himself). He joined the United States Army immediately after high school and was introduced to hip hop. He recorded, wrote and produced most songs for his first mixtape “Nothing Special Just A Guy With dreams” while Deployed to Tikrit, Iraq in 2009. Being deployed with the 1-55 brigade, he went by the callsighn “1 Shot” (short for 1 Shot 1 Kill). He released one song every week of his 11 month deployment. Later he joined his high school friend Darin Abston Jr, (DJ TheGr8) releasing “Last Name” which sparked an interest in his music and particular style. Later becoming affiliated with DC MusicGroup with Douglas “Superman” Ivory, Eric “EricJ” Jordan. Known for his troubled reputation, his big nose, gaged ears and flamboyant style, he’s hard to love but even harder to ignore. It’s particularly easy to get lost in his vivid lyrics accompanied by his unique voice and his animated cadence blending genres in the key of perfection.
Kevin James has over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry in various facets. He has worked as a recording artist, songwriter, producer, on-air radio personality, background actor and film director. Kevin is a Member of the National Writer's Union.
