Pure unbridled energy projecting a kinetic mystique describes the manner in which LifeSpiral-MJR’s “Samurai Rock” enters into your listening senses. The song and composition, which was created in collaboration with famous Japanese composer MOJI, is an instrumental piece which runs at a rapid, vigorous pace, harnessing a distinct contemporary rock, pop and alternative fusion sound; even some elements of punk appear, particularly in the breakdown.
However, before we dive further into the components which make up the magnificence of “Samurai Rock”, let us take a moment to provide some background on the key players involved in this project.
The band LifeSpiral-MJR was first formed in 2011 and was founded by MJR, an accomplished music savant who has flourished as an award winning guitarist, composer and producer. LifeSpiral-MJR has established themselves on an international level as they spent the majority of the 2010’s in Asia composing for other artists, while also performing across the continent, primarily in Hong Kong, China and Japan.
So now that you have some background on the creators of the song, let’s circle back to “Samurai Rock”. It’s one of four tracks off of LifeSpiral-MJR’s recent EP release Lake Shrine and the standout song shines with its plush section of blistering electric guitars and a racing percussion pattern which percolates across the soundscape.
“Samurai Rock”, which actually is a fitting title, also incorporates an Asian-inspired melodious riff throughout, created with a Japanese instrument called a shamisen . When I hear the phrase, it takes my mind to something that would have been prevalent in ancient Asian civilization.
The mesh with the rugged, cutting edge rock sonics is other worldly and it’s definitely something you have not heard before….maybe not from another artist that is, but the enigmatic nature and appeal of “Samurai Rock” is the signature style and genre-bending abilities that LifeSpiral-MJR brings to their recordings.
