Ezekiel Benjamin, better known professionally as Qeuyl, is a singer-songwriter who brings forth a distinct style of music that is bolstered by an ear-catching fusion of pop and R&B. The Bronx, NY native propels his unique artistry with an ability to exude the components of quintessential pop while injecting the rhythm and soul of R&B, particularly in the inviting, soft tones of his vocal delivery, which are subtly expressive and smooth sonically.
Today we’re going to spotlight a track from Qeuyl’s extensive catalog titled “Leap,” which was released in 2020, along with an accompanying music video via Zazoo Records. The track would later go on to also be included in Qeuyl’s 12-track album effort, Qeuyl’s Writing Book, and it possesses the signature pop/R&B characteristics that have been the backbone of Qeuyls proficient recordings since his emergence on the scene in 2012.
To me, what sets “Leap” apart from its contemporaries in Qeuyl’s discography is its incorporation of a more electropop soundscape, especially in the synth-heavy melodies and phrases in the hook that compels the song to a strong leaning in the dance space; however, as mentioned before, Qeuyl’s silky, smooth vocal presentation is what inserts the soulful dynamic into the track. With that said, what is “leap all about?!?
In “Leap,” Qeuyl touches on the dynamic of him imploring a young lady to take a chance on him romantically and that he’s willing to do anything to make her happy. You know the old saying, “take a leap of faith” on something or someone…He emotively lays out all the reasons they should be together, even cleverly invoking Prince’s “Kiss” as he sings, “you don’t have to be rich to be my girl, you don’t have to be cool to rule my world”.
“Leap” has an upbeat, light-hearted, and flirtatious mystique to it and definitely is a song that music listeners across a wide demographic will gravitate to, driven by its poppy hook and engaging aura. “Leap” is available for streaming on all platforms, and you can jam to it via the Spotify link below.
